There are aspects of the job market that change on a regular basis, after all, it’s a marketplace where you are the vendor, and your next employer is the buyer. Even with changes in things like participation rates, casual and full-time roles, the unemployment rate and other economic factors some things remain consistent.
For you to stand out as a candidate, you firstly need a resume that highlights your skills and achievements – even if you are a first-time job seeker – making the reader of your resume or even your LinkedIn profile think “We need to have a chat with that person.”
Our first advice would be to research all your options and have a solid understanding of what opportunities may be out there, not just those that were highlighted at a job fair, or at high profile organisations.
Seek out advice and referrals from family and friends, as well as those who may have graduated a year or two ahead of you. Ask questions like “what would your advice be if you were in my shoes?” and “who do you think I should talk to as I explore the job market?”
Depending on how long you’ve been out of the market, you may find quite a bit has changed. Networking and tapping into your contacts for advice, referrals and feedback have steadily grown in importance. Take the time to research the market and figure out how your ‘old’ skills at work fit into the current world.

Resumes today are designed to simply ‘start a conversation’. What do we mean by that? Your resume should provide a summary paragraph that highlights both your hard skills (technical ones) as well as your soft skills (personality, the type of work environment you enjoy and your working style) and how others at work might describe you.
